Vacation season has officially arrived! If you’re looking for cheap ways to travel this summer, check out these money saving ideas to keep your trip from breaking the bank.

  • Book Flights During the Week: Most travelers want to book flights on Fridays through Sundays, which makes traveling on the weekdays often much cheaper. So if you’re traveling on a budget, consider taking a week of vacation from Wednesday through Wednesday, instead of Saturday through Saturday.
  • Don’t Rule Layovers Out: Direct flights are great as they are the quickest way to get your destination, but if you’re looking for cheap ways to travel consider a flight with a layover. Most layovers are only an hour or two long, and can save you hundreds of dollars on your plane ticket. 


Use these tips to save money on hotels for your vacation:

  • Stay in the Financial District: Most big cities have a number of swanky hotels in their financial districts. These hotels are often quite pricey on weekdays when filled with business travelers, but Travelzoo says you can often find significantly cheaper rates on weekends.
  • Book a “Secret” Hotel Deal: Many discount travel sites such as Hotwire, Expedia, and Travelocity make traveling on a budget easy, by offering deep discounts on “secret” hotels. You will be able to see details such as hotel class, amenities offered, and the general location before booking. After you book your room, the name of the hotel will be revealed.
  • Sign Up for Sample Sales: You might be looking for tips to save money on vacation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay in style! Sites such as Jetsetter and SniqueAway hold flash sales, where you can find huge discounts on luxury hotels.


Traveling on a budget isn’t as difficult as it sounds. If you’re looking for cheap ways to travel, consider these ideas when planning your vacation:

  • Sign up for Local Discounts: You might subscribe to Groupon, Living Social, and Google Offers, for deals in your hometown, so why not sign up to find deals in your vacation spot? Subscribe to these sites and discounts for local restaurants, sightseeing expeditions, transportation, activities, and even hotels will be delivered right to your inbox.
  • Coupon Books: Many hotels have coupon books and brochures in the lobby and even in the rooms. You can also find these sitting at the entrances to local businesses such as drug stores and grocery stores. Instead of tossing these aside, browse through them to see if you can find any coupons or other money saving ideas.
  • Be Flexible: If possible don’t lock yourself into specific dates for your vacation right away, advises Sometimes it’s much cheaper to travel one day of the week than it is to go to the same exact place a couple of days before or after.
